Venice votes in unofficial referendum

In Venice, an unofficial vote closes on Friday. One of the world's most famous tourist destinations want to break-away from Italy. Some Venice residents say the lagoon city and its entire region, Veneto, pay too many taxes to the central government of Rome, and see their local identity demeaned by the connection with Italy. According to organizers of the referendum, every year Veneto residents contribute to the Italian state with €70 billion in taxes, of which €20 billion never make it back to the region. The vote won't be recognized by the Italian government but referendum supporters hope it will be the first step towards independence. Al Jazeera's Claudio Lavanga reports from Venice.
